The MIT story
MIT was chartered in 1861 by the geologist William Barton Rogers to accelerate America's industrialization, and its motto — "mens et manus," mind and hand — still describes how its people work. This is the campus whose Radiation Laboratory grew from 30 staff to nearly 4,000 during World War II, whose Instrumentation Laboratory guided the Apollo missions to the Moon, and where Tim Berners-Lee founded the World Wide Web Consortium in 1994.
The builder culture runs deep. Project MAC pioneered time-sharing and artificial intelligence in the 1960s and helped give birth to hacker culture itself, and since 1969 MIT's UROP program has put undergraduates into real faculty research from their first year. 105 Nobel laureates, 26 Turing Award winners, and 8 Fields Medalists are affiliated with the Institute.
